Unit 1: Fundamentals of Coaching and Therapy in Family Contexts
This unit establishes the conceptual foundation of the qualification. You will explore how coaching and therapeutic approaches need to be adapted when the client is a child, a young person, or a family system rather than an individual adult. You will examine a range of therapeutic models effective in family contexts, consider how to adapt your approach to different family structures and dynamics, and explore the practitioner's role in supporting family wellbeing.
Ethical considerations are central from the outset. You will examine the particular ethical challenges of working with children and families — including how to navigate confidentiality when a child's safety is at risk, the importance of clear boundaries in therapeutic relationships, and how ethical dilemmas arise in practice and how to manage them thoughtfully.
Communication is explored in depth: how engagement techniques differ when working with children compared to adults, how non-verbal communication can build trust with a young person, the role of active listening in building rapport with family members, and how to adapt communication when working across cultural backgrounds.
The unit also introduces cultural sensitivity as a professional responsibility — exploring why cultural awareness is essential, how socio-economic context shapes families' experiences, and the consequences of culturally insensitive practice on therapeutic outcomes.

Unit 2: Child Development and Family Dynamics
This unit provides essential grounding in child development theory and its application to therapeutic coaching practice. You will study Piaget's stages of cognitive development and their relevance in coaching and therapeutic contexts, Erikson's psychosocial stages and their application to adolescent support, and attachment theories and their impact on child development within the family.
You will also engage with Family Systems Theory — understanding how families function as interconnected systems, how patterns within the system influence child behaviour and development, and how change in one family member creates ripples across the whole family. This systemic perspective is foundational to the entire ACFC pathway.
The unit explores developmental challenges and evidence-based strategies for addressing them, including the role of resilience in child development and why early intervention matters. You will consider how family dynamics contribute to children's behaviour, and how to coach parents and caregivers in ways that nurture children's emotional development — including navigating cultural beliefs and child-raising practices with sensitivity and respect.

Unit 3: Therapeutic Techniques for Children and Families
Building on the theoretical knowledge developed in Units 1 and 2, this unit introduces a range of therapeutic techniques applicable to child and family coaching contexts. You will explore therapeutic play — how play therapy can be used to address emotional issues in children, how to select appropriate play activities for different developmental stages, and how play can facilitate communication with children who have limited verbal language.
The unit introduces behavioural and regulation techniques for family settings, exploring how these can be adapted to meet the specific needs of individual families and why consistency in applying strategies at home is so important. You will also explore crisis intervention — how to assess a situation, when and how to intervene, and how to maintain the trust and confidentiality that make effective intervention possible.
Professional and ethical boundaries are addressed throughout — including how the physical therapeutic space can support or undermine the therapeutic experience for children and families.

Unit 4: Professional Practice and Continuing Development
The final unit of the Foundation Certificate addresses the legal, professional and developmental dimensions of practice. You will examine the legal requirements practitioners must understand when working with children and families in the UK, including safeguarding responsibilities and confidentiality obligations. The unit explores what professional standards mean in practice, the implications of breaching confidentiality, and the practitioner's duty of care.
Case management and documentation are introduced — including what effective case recording looks like, why accurate documentation matters legally and ethically, and how documentation supports supervision and professional development. You will also explore interprofessional collaboration: the value of working alongside other professionals, the challenges this can present, and how to maintain professional identity and clear boundaries when collaborating.
The unit closes with continuing professional development — why CPD is a professional responsibility, how to identify your own development needs, and how to build a meaningful professional development plan.
