# What Is Therapeutic Coaching for Children and Families?

Over the last decade, a quiet revolution has been taking place in how we think about supporting children and families. Somewhere between traditional therapy and conventional coaching, a new — and urgently needed — discipline has been developing: therapeutic coaching for children and families.

But what does it actually mean? And why are so many practitioners, parents, and educators turning towards it?

## The Space Between Therapy and Coaching

Therapeutic coaching is not therapy. It does not aim to diagnose, treat clinical conditions, or work within a medical model. Nor is it traditional life coaching — goal-setting and accountability frameworks designed primarily for neurotypical adults with stable foundations. Therapeutic coaching sits deliberately in the space between the two, drawing on the relational depth and neuroscientific grounding of therapeutic traditions while holding the forward-moving, empowering energy of coaching.

For children and families, this distinction is not merely academic. Children do not exist in isolation. They exist within families, within schools, within communities. Their emotional regulation, behaviour, and development are inextricably linked to the relational systems around them. A child who presents as dysregulated is often communicating something that belongs to the whole system, not just to them as an individual.

Therapeutic coaching starts where the child is — not where we think they should be.

## What Does It Look Like in Practice?

Therapeutic coaching with children and families is relational, playful, and deeply respectful of each individual's neurology, lived experience, and context. Sessions might include one-to-one work with a child using creative arts or play-based approaches, alongside coaching conversations with parents or carers about how to extend regulation and connection in daily life. It might look like a practitioner supporting a young person to build emotional vocabulary, or working with a family to understand the sensory triggers behind a child's explosive behaviour.

Critically, it is strengths-based. Therapeutic coaching does not begin with deficits. It begins with curiosity — about who this child is, what they already bring, and what conditions they need in order to thrive.

## Why Families Are Seeking It Out

Many families are caught in a difficult gap. Their child may not meet thresholds for CAMHS intervention, yet they are clearly struggling. School can provide limited pastoral support. Traditional counselling may not suit their child's age, communication style, or neurodevelopmental profile. Therapeutic coaching fills this gap with something flexible, accessible, and genuinely responsive to the whole family system.

Research consistently shows that early relational support — support that reaches children before challenges become entrenched — produces the best long-term outcomes. Therapeutic coaching, when delivered by well-trained practitioners, offers exactly that kind of timely, responsive intervention.

Therapeutic coaching is distinct from therapy and traditional life coaching — it draws from both without replicating either

It is relational, strengths-based, and works with the whole family system, not just the child in isolation

It fills a critical gap for families who fall outside clinical thresholds but still need meaningful support

Early relational intervention produces better long-term outcomes for children

Our Level 5 and Level 6 qualifications give practitioners the foundations to work with children and families confidently, ethically, and with genuine depth of knowledge.
